The Department of Weights and Measures and KRA Conduct Joint Pre-Operational Inspection of West Valley Distillers Ethanol Plant in Kericho

The Department of Weights and Measures in partnership with the Kenya Revenue Authority, conducted a joint inspection of West Valley Distillers Limited in Kericho County ahead of the factory’s commencement of operations.

The visit focused on guiding the installation of custody transfer flowmeters to ensure accurate measurement and compliance with tax and regulatory requirements.

West Valley Distillers, a subsidiary of West Valley Sugar Company, has established an ethanol manufacturing plant that will produce inputs for spirits and clean cooking fuel as an alternative to charcoal.

Once operational, the facility is expected to create jobs, increase the supply of clean cooking fuel, support farmers through improved cane prices and contribute to climate change mitigation by reducing pressure on forest resources.

During the inspection, the team led by the Acting Director for Weights and Measures John Wamwana assessed the factory’s compliance status and advised management on fast-tracking statutory approvals to enable early production.

Custody transfer flowmeters are critical in ensuring fair trade, accurate tax assessment and sustainable manufacturing operations.
