The Directorate of Weights and Measures Urges Fuel Industry Players to Embrace Accurate Measurement Systems

The Directorate of Weights and Measures has advised players in the fuel industry to adopt accurate and secure measurement systems in a bid to reduce losses and enhance transparency.

Speaking at the three-day Afrifueling Expo 2025 held at Sarit Centre, Nairobi, the Acting Director, John Wamwana, emphasized the importance of integrating automated fuel gauging systems with accurately calibrated and verified storage tanks and road tankers. Wamwana noted that the reliability of automation is fundamentally dependent on the accuracy of the underlying physical measurements from which it is derived.

He stated that traditional manual methods such as dipsticks and dipping tapes not only pose significant safety risks but also contribute to substantial inaccuracies and opportunities for fraud and stressed the urgent need for regulatory oversight and technological upgrades to mitigate these challenges.

Also in attendance were various government support agencies, including the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the Kenya Investment Authority  for the national dialogue on the evolving role of technology in transforming the fueling sector in Africa and globally.

A collaborative program between the Directorate of Weights and Measures and KRA is currently underway to streamline automation and enhance fuel monitoring systems.
