Kenya and Colombia Seek to Strengthen Trade and Investment Cooperation

Kenya and Colombia share cordial trade and diplomatic relations spanning over 50 years, reflecting the strong and enduring ties between the two countries.

In 1977, the two nations signed a bilateral trade agreement, demonstrating a longstanding commitment to strengthening economic cooperation and expanding trade ties.

The Ambassador of Colombia to Kenya, Pedro León Cortés Ruíz, called on the Principal Secretary for Trade Regina Ombam, to discuss ways of advancing trade relations and exploring new areas of collaboration.

Principal Secretary Ombam noted that amid shifting global trade dynamics, Kenya is keen to strengthen partnerships with strategic partners like Colombia to expand trade and investment. 

She highlighted Kenya’s strategic position as a regional hub and a gateway to the East and Southern African region and the wider African continent, which Colombia can leverage to grow its trade and investment reach in Africa.

The Ambassador noted that Colombia is increasingly seeking to forge stronger trade partnerships across the African continent and Kenya remains a key partner in advancing these engagements.

Discussions focused on opportunities for cooperation in key sectors, including agriculture particularly the coffee industry,culture, tourism, green energy and logistics.

The meeting also addressed the upcoming Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC)-Africa High Level Forum, scheduled for March 18–20 in Bogotá, Colombia which Kenya is expected to participate.

The forum will to provide an important platform for deepening economic, political and cultural ties between Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa.
