Kenya and Uganda Sign Agreement to Boost Cross-Border Trade in Staple Foods

Kenya and Uganda have signed a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) on the Sidelines of the 46th COMESA Policy Organs Meeting a major milestone towards strengthening cross-border trade in key staples including maize, rice, beans, sorghum, soybean and groundnuts.

With support from COMESA, AGRA & FCDO-UK, both countries have harmonized SOPs, enhanced grading capacity, and strengthened conformity assessment systems.

Kenya has received new grading equipment, with training and installation underway.

The signing of the MRA will boost food security, farmer incomes and trade efficiency, while ensuring seamless commodity movement through Malaba OSBP.

The signing signals a historic step toward deeper regional integration and resilient agricultural value chains.
